The restructuring of global value/supply chains gained increasing attention as the unprecedented COVID-19 echoed around world. Yet, related theory-driven, large scale quantitative, and empirical studies are relatively scarce. This study advances extant literature by empirically investigating how do firms in food value (GFVCs) re-imagine their businesses structure response to COVID-19-becoming more resilient competitive current pandemic similar future events. We leverage a unique data 231 senior managers Australian GFVCs examine firms' strategies. Drawing upon key insights from dynamic capability view, we find that GFVCs' competitiveness is achieved when exposure shocks elicits capabilities-readiness, response, recovery-and these capabilities work jointly sequentially cultivate resilience. A finding this with domestic plus chain partners than those having only business partners. implies excessive reliance on offshoring sometimes becomes lethal, especially amid unexpected prolonged and, therefore, companies should strike balance between remain competitive. These findings offer important contributions theory, practice, UN sustainable development goals.
