Radiotherapy treatment planning is undergoing a transformation with the increasing integration of automation. This transition draws parallels aviation industry, which has long-standing history addressing challenges and opportunities introduced by automated systems. Both fields witness shift from manual operations to systems capable operating independently, raising questions about risks evolving role humans within workflows. In response this shift, working group assembled during ESTRO Physics Workshop 2023, reflected on draw lessons for radiotherapy. A taxonomy proposed, leveraging insights aviation, that outlines observed levels automation context radiotherapy their corresponding implications human involvement. Among common identified associated are complacency, overreliance, attention tunneling, data overload, lack transparency training. These require mitigation strategies. Such strategies include ensuring complementarity, introducing checklists safety requirements human-automation interaction using cognitive unload workflow management. Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, Journal Year: 2024, Volume and Issue: 96(7), P. 858 - 872

Published: July 4, 2024

Purpose This study aims to propose a methodology aimed at understanding the cognitive and physiological processes inherent in cadet pilot operations. Through analyzing responses from two pilots with varied experience levels across diverse simulation scenarios, research uses descriptive statistics, t -test, one-way ANOVA percentage change analysis explore crucial variables, including heart rate (HR), variability (HRV) respiratory (RR). Design/methodology/approach The investigation meticulously examines HR, HRV RR under circumstances encompassing resting state, visual flight rules instrument engine failure. Pilots undergo comprehensive analyses employing statistical techniques representations comprehend loads adaptations. Findings Significant disparities emerge between pilots, elucidating profound impact of on outcomes. Novice exhibit heightened during scenario transitions, while experienced demonstrate controlled responses, indicative adaptability. Visual simulations evoke distinct whereas instrument-based particularly those simulating emergencies, lead pronounced changes. Practical implications findings this hold practical significance introducing proposed novel for monitoring Cadet refine training protocols enhance aviation safety by illuminating interplay complexities. Originality/value proposes investigating operations, mainly pilots’ vital parameters through analytical methods an exploration scenario-specific demands.

The current study conducted by Mindset Technologies and Frequentis has validated a methodology to assess the influence of CHI design ATM applications on cognitive load air traffic controllers interacting with ATC communications systems. We examined impact fixations, saccades, blink rates duration controllers' eyes. collected data was then categorized in perceived load, subjective reports test personnel competency decision-making, usability, human error resilience among others. Two analyses were performed, one using gaze mind tracking method second determining via NASA task index (NASA-TLX) questionnaire. Both methods are valid for measuring conducting mental workload (MWL) assessment. paper describes testing methodology, setup experimental laboratory discusses results indicating that monitoring blinks saccades have higher sensitivity effects than rating (NASA-TLX).
