Abstract Migratory animals can act as cross-boundary subsidies sustaining ecosystem functioning, such diadromous fishes that migrate between fresh water and seawater carry nutrients energy across the freshwater-marine ecotone. Frequency timing of migration are however highly variable within among populations. We hypothesized in catadromous (i.e., grow freshwater spawn sea, eels), import by migratory juveniles could outweigh export adults due to skipped spawning migration. used diamond mullet Planiliza ordensis, a model species, determined life-history traits using combination length-to-age data, acoustic telemetry otolith (fish ear stone) microchemistry. mass balance approach individual acquisition allocation, extended our other strategies. Our results showed high intra-population variation behaviour P. ordensis , with few individuals migrating every year spawn. estimated an acted net 42.6g biomass subsidy water, representing retention more than 50% juvenile at entry. predicts is likely alter allocation highlighting important effects on fluxes nutrient scales. encourage future studies consider how affect direction magnitude ecotone boundaries.

Wildflower strips have been heralded as a promising way to enhance ecosystem services by providing organisms which may help make farming less dependent on external inputs. However, recent studies show inconsistent effects delivery of and crop yield, warranting more detailed analysis the factors determining wildflower strips. We examined how natural enemy groups spider, carabid beetle staphylinid beetle, well aphid pest yield respond furthermore determined whether response enemies, aphids depends flower cover species richness, this is influenced fertilizer insecticide applications in 16 winter wheat fields Netherlands. We used an experimental approach with nested design that included all combinations (present/absent), application (yes/no) (yes/no).Presence did not affect ground-dwelling or yield. However, availability across control margins was positively related abundance pooled number spiders beetles.Positive were observed over limited distances; up 5 m from edge for yield. The on-field management practices interact suggesting that, our study, flowers but mainly additive. Our study indicates richness wildflowers field margin habitat, rather than establishment per se, drove increases enemies yield. This suggests attention should be given optimization success seed mixtures enhancing diversity.Furthermore, biodiversity herbaceous vegetation linear landscape elements represent cost-effective alternative boost regulating production agricultural landscapes.
