Does agricultural cooperative membership influence off‐farm work decisions of farm couples?

Abstract
Membership
in
agricultural
cooperatives
may
influence
intra‐household
decisions
regarding
the
division
of
household
labor.
However,
linkages
between
cooperative
membership
and
labor
allocation
remain
unexplored.
To
fill
this
gap,
we
examine
impact
on
off‐farm
work
couples
engaged
farming,
using
data
collected
from
595
banana
farmers
China.
The
recursive
bivariate
probit
model
endogenous‐treatment
Poisson
regression
are
employed
to
address
self‐selection
bias
inherent
membership.
results
show
that
increases
probability
participating
by
38%
for
husbands
31%
wives.
Having
large
households
reduces
but
wives
working
off‐farm.
Cooperative
is
also
associated
with
more
time
spent
higher
earnings
both
Our
findings
point
potential
increase
farm
couples’
employment,
thus
increasing
income
quality
life.

Exploring within- and between-effects of the factors influencing off-farm work decisions in Switzerland

We
examine
the
determinants
of
off-farm
work
in
Swiss
agriculture
between
2003
and
2013.
By
differentiating
between-farm
effects
within-farm
effects,
our
model
provides
new
insights
into
labour
allocation
process
as
compared
with
standard
cross-sectional
or
panel
data
models.
As
regards
variations,
results
show
that
younger
farm
families
without
children
households
higher
non-agricultural
education
levels
both
farmer
partner
are
more
involved
working
activities
outside
farm.
However,
time
provided
a
differentiated
picture:
impacts
changes
most
variables
over
tended
to
be
smaller,
case
two
opposite
directions.
In
addition
negative
between-effect
income
on
labour,
suggest
an
increase
per
annual
family
unit
could
compatible
share
during
analysed
period.

To
respond
to
the
environmental
problems
posed
by
disposable
plastic
bags,
several
mechanisms
exist,
such
as
bag
taxes
and
bans,
but
policies
are
infeasible
in
U.S.
states
municipalities.
This
study
uses
a
social
quasi-experiment
examine
effect
of
voluntary
token-donation
program,
which
reduces
use
providing
small
charitable
donation
incentive.
We
find
that
program
probability
11.4–12.9
percentage
points,
representing
about
30%–34%
decrease
use.
Our
results
demonstrate
effective
reduce
bags
exist
without
government-mandated
policy.
