DESTiny, an online farm-wide tool to estimate the net carbon emissions of a pasture-based dairy farms in South Africa

The
dairy
farming
industry
is
an
important
contributor
to
both
South
Africa’s
economy
and
food
security.
However,
in
Africa,
like
elsewhere
the
world,
has
come
under
scrutiny
because
of
animal
welfare
concerns
contributions
greenhouse
gas
(GHG)
emissions.
To
address
GHG
mitigation,
we
have
constructed
a
farm-level
system
dynamics
model
assess
emissions,
capture
storage
carbon
(C)
on
farms,
determine
whether
farms
are
net
emitters
C
(i.e.,
sources)
or
sequestrators
sinks).
We
considered
nutrient
flows,
type
volume
feed,
effluent
management
system,
various
parameters
relating
herd
dynamics,
overall
effect
farm
economy.
resulting
online
Dairy
Environment
Sustainability
Tool
(DESTiny)
can
help
farmers
adopt
sustainable
practices,
as
well
improve
competitiveness
financial
sustainability
while
reducing
farm’s
emissions
profile,
thereby
building
value-chain
consumer
trust.
DESTiny
be
science-informed
evidence-based
tool
for
estimating,
monitoring
understanding
flows
production
systems.

also
web-based

with
user-interface
which
allows
remote
users,
researchers,
practitioners,
technicians
ease

The
European
Union’s
latest
common
agricultural
policy
(CAP)
aims
to
minimise
the
negative
consequences
of
agriculture
on
environment
and
climate.
This
ambition
has
been
translated
into
introduction
eco-schemes,
which
stimulates
farmers
transition
sustainable
agriculture.

three
questions
regarding
operation
eco-scheme

livestock
farming
in
Netherlands.

From Naturalness to Environmental Control: Influences of Transitioning Production Systems on Dairy Farmers’ Perceptions of Cow Welfare

We
conducted
semi
structured
in-person
interviews
with
36
dairy
farmers
in
a
producing
region
southern
Brazil
undergoing
intensification.
Thematic
analysis
revealed
that
farmers'
perceptions
of
cow
welfare
were
closely
tied
to
their
production
environment.
Farmers
pasture-based
systems
emphasized
the
importance
outdoor
access
and
grazing,
associating
these
cows'
intrinsic
needs
longevity.
Conversely,
operating
confined
systems,
or
those
positive
attitudes
towards
transitioning
confinement,
linked
practices
aim
at
minimizing
environmental
stressors,
enhancing
comfort,
boosting
productivity.
Despite
differing
views,
empathetic
concerns
cows
evident
both
groups
influenced
decisions
such
as
improving
farm
infrastructure
using
anesthetics
invasive
procedures.
However,
transition
was
associated
more
instrumental
view
animals,
seen
abandonment
naming
greater
focus
on
productive
performance.
All
things
considered,
this
study
suggests
working
structures
may
influence
animal
care,
indicating
likely
depends
not
only
but
also
global
local
policies
shape
agricultural
through
incentives
constraints.
