We conducted semi structured in-person interviews with 36 dairy farmers in a producing region southern Brazil undergoing intensification. Thematic analysis revealed that farmers' perceptions of cow welfare were closely tied to their production environment. Farmers pasture-based systems emphasized the importance outdoor access and grazing, associating these cows' intrinsic needs longevity. Conversely, operating confined systems, or those positive attitudes towards transitioning confinement, linked practices aim at minimizing environmental stressors, enhancing comfort, boosting productivity. Despite differing views, empathetic concerns cows evident both groups influenced decisions such as improving farm infrastructure using anesthetics invasive procedures. However, transition was associated more instrumental view animals, seen abandonment naming greater focus on productive performance. All things considered, this study suggests working structures may influence animal care, indicating likely depends not only but also global local policies shape agricultural through incentives constraints.

The dairy farming industry is an important contributor to both South Africa’s economy and food security. However, in Africa, like elsewhere the world, has come under scrutiny because of animal welfare concerns contributions greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To address GHG mitigation, we have constructed a farm-level system dynamics model assess emissions, capture storage carbon (C) on farms, determine whether farms are net emitters C (i.e., sources) or sequestrators sinks). We considered nutrient flows, type volume feed, effluent management system, various parameters relating herd dynamics, overall effect farm economy. resulting online Dairy Environment Sustainability Tool (DESTiny) can help farmers adopt sustainable practices, as well improve competitiveness financial sustainability while reducing farm’s emissions profile, thereby building value-chain consumer trust. DESTiny be science-informed evidence-based tool for estimating, monitoring understanding flows production systems. It also web-based (see https://assetresearch.org.za/destiny-tool/ ) with user-interface which allows remote users, researchers, practitioners, technicians ease access integrating models on-farm realities.

The European Union’s latest common agricultural policy (CAP) aims to minimise the negative consequences of agriculture on environment and climate. This ambition has been translated into introduction eco-schemes, which stimulates farmers transition sustainable agriculture. paper answers three questions regarding operation eco-scheme for livestock farming in Netherlands. First, who are recipients grants? Second, how have EU grants developed over time these recipients? Third, do farm more sustainably? To answer questions, we conducted an empirical analysis based administrative microeconomic data, included indicators measure practices. Our results show that most Dutch dairy larger farms receive relatively grant funding per hectare. marked a shift toward less income support encourage triggered significant downturn financial situation many farmers. Dairy score higher sustainability average benefit from eco-scheme, although there is also substantial share benefited financially but low sustainability. These insights contribute further improvement EU’s policies successful
