Cyanobacteria blooms (cHABs) comprised of the potentially toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis, are increasing in waterbodies worldwide. CHABs estuaries often originate from upstream locations with longer hydraulic residence times (e.g., reservoirs, static channels). These also accumulate higher concentrations benthic overwintering cells that serve as inoculum for subsequent year's blooms. We investigated Microcystis seed stock hydrologically complex upper San Francisco Estuary known Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to quantify total sediments available inoculate summertime To study bloom origin and succession, DNA discrete water sediment samples PCR amplified using cyanobacteria-specific 16S-23S ITS rDNA primers. Results confirmed hypothesis peripheral areas have highest generally surface water. high genetic diversity population 36 unique genotypes detected column. This demonstrates should be considered when investigating dynamics across large estuarine systems.

ABSTRACT Decomposition of Cyanobacterial blooms frequently occurs in Lake Taihu, releasing various fractions algal organic matter into the water through cell lysis. These influence production and consumption dissolved matter, nutrient dynamics, bacterial succession lake. However, interactions between free‐living particle‐attached communities with different remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated effects two distinct fractions, obtained a fractionation procedure simulating cyanobacterial bloom collapse, on freshwater communities. The degradation both resulted stage‐specific changes chemical properties lake water, which were divided stages (labeled Stage I II). Flavobacteriaceae was dominant I, whereas Methylophilaceae dominated II. Long‐term ecological observations indicated that bacteria responded more sensitively to than bacteria. Compared algal‐derived filtrate, breakdown residual exudative led complex community network. findings provide new insights capacity utilize highlight their roles aquatic ecosystems during post‐bloom stage.

During the spring and summer of 2019, an unprecedented cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) was responsible for beach advisories on 25 beaches along Mississippi Sound over 3 months. Due to preceding heavy rainfall flooding within River watershed, first time in history, Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) opened twice one year during 2019. The coastal cyanoHAB coincided with second BCS opening. main objectives this study were: (1) investigate potential using National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) ocean color standard Cyanobacteria Index (CIcyano) algorithm characterize spatial temporal extent 2019 cyanoHAB; (2) couple CIcyano data river discharge, salinity, modeled-wind conditions leading factors aiding advection persistence Sound, including a possible relationship BCS; (3) further by repeating methods from 2018, which when but no evidence cyanoHABs reported coast. Weekly means monthly frequency images, February September 2018 were analyzed, coincide three openings. In March cyanobacteria observed Lake Pontchartrain coinciding opening; however, month-long contained lake. Two distinct both blooms advected into likely contributed 3-month-long water coastline. From mid-July salinity at stations consistently near zero indicating high levels freshwater. that time, winds predominantly northwestward, preventing waters flushing Shelf resulting remaining longer estuarine lakes Sound. Although had undeniable impact presence other variables wind direction, flow, mixing, freshwater can determine intensity cyanoHABs. Coupling situ phytoplankton information bodies marine continuum data, satellite imagery could help identify early stages forecast their trajectory impacts areas.

Cyanobacterial blooms introduce autochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM) into aquatic environments, but their impact on surface water photoreactivity has not been investigated through collaborative field sampling with comparative laboratory assessments. In this work, we quantified the apparent quantum yields (Φapp,RI) of reactive intermediates (RIs), including excited triplet states (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), for whole samples collected by citizen volunteers from more than 100 New York lakes.
