Abstract This article investigates the effectiveness of lottery incentive schemes for eliciting consumer valuations in large‐scale online experiments. We implement a fully incentivized condition within geographically dispersed sample consumers which bids Criollo steak elicited by Becker‐DeGroot‐Marschak mechanism are realized with certainty and products priority shipped dry‐ice coolers. The is compared to between‐subject random schemes, only fraction subjects realize their choices. tested two treatments 10% probability framed as percentage or an absolute number subjects, one treatment 1% probability, purely hypothetical reference condition. results reveal that payment probabilities effective statistically indistinguishable from scheme. In addition finding insignificant statistical differences between scheme, all conditions mitigate bias, resulting lower product than contribute novel methodological framework conducting experiments diverse representative increasing external validity producing reliable while significantly reducing financial logistic constraints.

Abstract Nonclassical measurement error threatens the validity of empirical economic models. We examine extent to which land value measures that are commonly used in studies US farmland market subject nonclassical error. consider differences county‐level values from two popular data sources: (1) self‐reported assessments 2017 Census Agriculture and (2) observed sales prices agricultural transactions (2013–2017). find difference between these sources, we interpret as error, is correlated with multiple determinants value. Farmland characteristics, including size, negatively related this difference, implying more information a allows respondents better update their priors about land's Survey also slow areas rapid recent price changes. Surprisingly, be climate. To illustrate implications, conduct Ricardian analysis climate change impacts temperature, particular, differentially capitalized into estimates prices. Under certain specifications, using generates damage pessimistic but ultimately not significantly different those However, regional heterogeneity highlights where significant, namely northern half eastern United States. More generally, our findings highlight important considerations for researchers relying on alternative sources.

A popular strategy for mitigating climate change is to persuade or incentivize individuals limit behaviors associated with high greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, adults in the mid-Atlantic United States bid an auction receive compensation eliminating beef consumption limiting vehicle use. The incentivized participants reveal their true costs of accepting these limits periods ranging from one week year. Compliance conditions was confirmed via a random field audit behavioral changes. estimated median abatement were greater than $600 per tCO2e and $1,300 use, values much higher price carbon offsets most estimates social cost carbon. Although may decline over time experience broader adoption, they imply that policies encourage innovations reduce behavior change, such as meat alternatives emission-free vehicles, be more fruitful those
