ABSTRACT Aim To assess the impact of moving from open bay units (OBU) to single‐family rooms (SFR) on parental closeness in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Methods This observational longitudinal cohort study was conducted between February 2021 and January 2024, during which time setting changed OBU SFR with a mixed phase between. All parent‐infant dyads were eligible for inclusion. The self‐reported present unit, lap holding, skin‐to‐skin care (SSC) used measure closeness. Results 833 parents infants included (365 OBU, 140 mixed, 328 phase). Parental presence increased mothers 210 min/day 420 ( p = 0.000) SFR, partners 180 360 < 0.001). Only mothers, holding 100 120 0.046). SSC 160 0.002) 110 130 0.004) partners. These findings independent gestational age. Conclusion Moving an NICU. However, more changes are needed meet EFCNI WHO recommendations.

Abstract

Skin-to-skin care (SSC) is essential, can help to prevent separation of parents and the neonate in NICU, should be a standard practice. It safely integrated into routine preterm neonates, those who require surgery, all levels intensive care. Years experience with provision SSC our NICU influenced approach resulted practice guidelines for safe SSC.
