Abstract This paper examines why, despite greater numbers of youth out‐migration, connections to rural land remain strong for young people in a remote farming village on Flores Island, Indonesia. Following recent geographic work the development people's aspirations and how imaginings “elsewhere” support navigational practices, I explore migrate pursue their that lay well outside village. Drawing household survey data life experiences middle generations moving between Indonesian cities, show why many migrate, have retuned, or plan return, Their reflections share common narrative: livelihood limitations present made it inevitable would leave, while relative social economic security land, along with kin ties, make seemingly impossible not return.
