Previous studies demonstrated that variation in sperm morphology exists below the species level a variety of organisms. However, most focus on invertebrates with only few recent vertebrates majority birds and mammals. Understanding at various taxonomic levels is necessary for comparative studies. Therefore, to test hypothesis shows little between within closely related taxa, was analyzed multiple populations two sister lizards, Sceloporus consobrinus undulatus. The ultrastructure did not differ intraspecifically nor interspecifically, but differences were observed morphometrics populations. data gathered this study show spermatozoa consistent other squamates, although no slight variations when compared members Phrynosoma. size differs despite there may be selection

Global warming is affecting biodiversity; however, the extent to which animal reproductive processes respond predicted temperature increments remains largely unexplored. The thermal environment has a pronounced impact on metabolic rates of ectotherms; therefore, an interesting question assess whether increase might affect specific mechanisms like sperm performance in ectotherms. Moreover, many species, oviductal fluid (OF) known regulate and maintain quality; role OF relation effects high unclear. Our aim was experimentally test effect increased velocity, swimming path percentage motility neutral conditions at ejaculation (without OF) female's tract (with OF), social ectotherm lizard model, Tropidurus spinulosus, requirements for reproduction. results suggest that rising associated with global (+4°C) affects negatively dynamics survival. However, ameliorated harmful temperature. This important point, as this study first have tested preserving from warmer pre-fertilization environment. These contribute our understanding how changes post-copulatory mechanisms. article First Person interview author paper.

Abstract Phenotype in lizards is related to reproductive function, and hence output. Besides the intraspecific diversity phenotypes, their temporal variation throughout season relation of social contexts builds extra complexity into sexual selection scenarios. One useful model for understanding phenotypic dynamics Tropidurus spinulosus because it presents dimorphism different traits, dichromatism regions behaviour, has intense interactions. We aimed evaluate how traits individuals vary with changing contexts, intrasexual potential are explained by traits. In this study, we used data obtained during four consecutive breeding seasons (2015–2018) a wild population. The context, characterized according operational sex ratio, varied between months and, therefore, some also varied. found that body robustness chromatic were main sources both sexes. Our results help understand implications lizard model.

Reproductive physiology is influenced by environmental pressures, particularly in ectothermic species living harsh climatic conditions. Studying the period of time which males exhibit semen availability and their sperm traits constitutes a powerful tool to evaluate fertility potential because size velocity have been proposed as determinants fertilization success. Pristidactylus achalensis lizard endemic highest mountain areas Central Argentina shows pattern seasonal activity. Here, we study when possess during active season characterize spermatozoa based on morphometric dynamic among within ejaculate. Males ejaculates only spring months season, suggesting that reproductive activity restricted this time. Spermatozoa show intra-specific variation ejaculate, different males. Since occupies mountains categorized vulnerable, basic information about reproduction could be useful for population conservation strategies.

Abstract We described for the first time spermatozoan ultrastructure of fully pentadactyl surface‐living skink Trachylepis punctatissima , and limbless fossorial Acontias meleagris . The spermatozoa both species follow general patterns observed within Squamata. However, several important differences were detected between two in head region (shape anterior acrosome, size acrosome nucleus) especially midpiece (size midpiece, presence regular rows dense bodies, number mitochondria beginning fibrous sheath). Both shared more characters with Sphenomorphus + Egernia group than Eugongylus proposed by Jamieson, Oliver, Scheltinga ( Acta Zoologica, 77, 85). Differences T. A. could be due to distinct ecological physiological requirements fertilization, but additional research on these genera Scincidae is required disentangle this hypothesis, phylogenetic relationships among skinks.
