Males and females are defined by the relative size of their gametes (anisogamy), but secondary sexual dimorphism in fertilization, parental investment mating competition is widespread often remarkably stable over evolutionary timescales. Recent theory has clarified causal connections between anisogamy most prevalent differences sexes, deviations from these patterns remain poorly understood. Here, we study how sex coevolve with care specialization. Parental consists two or more distinct activities (e.g. provisioning defence) parents may efficiently specializing a subset activities. Our model predicts that efficient specialization broadens conditions under which biparental can evolve lineages historically had uniparental care. Major transitions roles female-biased strong male to male-biased female competition) arise following ecologically induced changes costs benefits different types, ratio at maturation. provides clear mechanism for sex-role transitions, also such should be rare. It consequently contributes towards explaining phylogenetic inertia parenting systems.

Broadcast spawning invertebrates offer highly tractable models for evaluating sperm competition, gamete-level mate choice and sexual conflict. By displaying the ancestral mating strategy of external fertilization, where selection is constrained to act after gamete release, broadcast spawners also potential evolutionary insights into cascade events that led reproduction in more ‘derived’ groups (including humans). Moreover, dynamic reproductive conditions faced by these animals mean strength direction on both males females can vary considerably. These attributes make invertebrate systems uniquely suited testing, extending, sometimes challenging classic contemporary ideas many which were first captured Parker's seminal papers topic. Here, we provide a synthesis outlining progress fields, highlight burgeoning mechanistic understanding broadly across animal kingdom. This article part theme issue ‘Fifty years competition’.
