Abstract Designating protected and conserved areas is a critical component of biodiversity conservation. The 10th Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2010 set global targets for the areal extent (PAs) that were met partially 2020, yet new, more ambitious target needed to halt ongoing loss. China recently introduced national Ecological Conservation Redline policy, which aims ensure no net change land cover loss or degradation ecosystem services within are maintaining ecological safety functions. Enacting this policy could achieve ancillary conservation outcomes even where not primary objective, thus meeting CBD's definition “other effective area‐based measures” (OECM). By comparing boundaries with important coastal waterbird sites China, we found three times be under new redline compared nature reserve system alone. This indicates considering approach as form OECM promising pathway expand coverage PAs conserve outside currently designated PAs, providing model adopted around world.
