The Ponto-Caspian round goby Neogobius melanostomus is a fish well known for its invasion success in North America and Europe. Though it originates from eastern Europe, only native to few rivers this region. Since the species physiologically tolerant of varying environmental conditions, rapid spread establishment adjacent water basins likely. Establishment also associated with ecological consequences. It therefore important track close region, which often overshadowed by reports further away. Here we report first evidence alien Aegean watershed N. following regional monitoring program fauna. Size- sex–related characteristics population are discussed relation level establishment.

Abstract Salinity can shape species’ distributions via physiological costs. Understanding how and when these costs occur help predict colonisation patterns, for example during species invasions. To understand the impacts of high salinity environments on ongoing expansion invasive round goby ( Neogobius melanostomus ) towards North Sea, fish from this invasion front were spawned in a common-garden setup at different salinities. Reproductive adults acclimated to control (20 PSU) representing current conditions, Sea coastal (30 PSU). In salinities they sorted into spawning groups, attempts egg development was tracked 1.5 months. The results showed strong impact 30 PSU treatment, with complete developmental failure all clutches salinity. failed resulted significant increase consumption by nest-guarding males. addition, sperm velocity decrease increasing tested both an intermediate level. Few differences adult physiology found as consequence treatments. These show that, despite acclimation gametes N. cannot now cope which their spread is currently predicted. Though adaptation or transgenerational might allow reproduction higher than occupy, we suggest models incorporate reproductive limit PSU.

Health and nutrition of individuals are tied to reproductive success, which determines population viability. Environmental variability anthropogenic effects can affect the health a species leading repercussions hinder recovery endangered populations. Indices were examined for an imperiled species, delta smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus, in relation their status evaluate hydrologic conditions San Francisco Estuary Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Adult smelt collected by Fall Midwater Trawl Spring Kodiak during monthly monitoring surveys run California Department Fish Wildlife from 2011 2018 spanning head Carquinez strait Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel. The this period ranged high precipitation (2011 2017) drought (2012-2016). Drought, via indirect contaminant concentrations food availability, is hypothesized influence success smelt. Each individual was size (length, weight, condition factor), (gill liver pathology/indices), nutritional (RNA/DNA glycogen depletion estimated histologically), indicators (gonadosomatic indices [GSI], oocyte developmental stage, clutch size, weight). Fork length factor both had strong, positive correlations with reproduction. Glycogen correlated higher mass, area GSI, indicating females low metrics. Gill lesion severity, often increases exposure, negatively associated GSI. Delta Suisun Marsh Cache Slough longest fork highest measures. metrics proportion post-spawned late-stage oocytes. Drought did not appear reproduction but reduced size.
