Abstract Clay minerals play a crucial role in regulating the structure and functions of soils because their chemical nature interactions with other soil constituents. In this context, key objective research described article was to assess extent which addition various types recycled clay‐rich materials prone crusting erosion increase clay content improve physical properties. Excavated (ExS), considered waste under European Union law, quarry sludge (QS), an industrial by‐product washing process mining operations, were used as amendments. ExS is dominated by swelling mineralogy such interstratified illite‐smectite, whereas QS contains high level non‐swelling kaolinite illite, low illite‐smectite. Lysimeters filled topsoil (0–30 cm) from agricultural field. Treatments where amended these compared control without amendment. Lettuce cultivated for three growing seasons. After 250‐days, aggregate stability water retention measured. The equivalent pore‐size distribution (PSD), derived curve, analysed predict aeration status. application enhanced compromising lettuce productivity treatments. However, amending decreased abundance minerals. Soil at saturation increased 27% 42% 36% amendments, respectively. At pressure head >15,000 cm (residual pores <0.2 μm), rose 6% 19% 14% QS. material small larger ones. This led minor porosity responsible movement, root growth. observation highlights limitations benefits, depend on quantity presence binding agents. Further needed investigate combined effects organic matter improving optimizing pore size multiple functions.
