The African lion has declined to <35,000 individuals occupying 25% of its historic range. situation is most critical for the geographically isolated populations in West Africa, where species considered regionally endangered. Elevating their conservation significance, recent molecular studies establish genetic distinctiveness and Central lions from other extant populations. Interventions save are urgently required. However formulating effective strategies been hampered by a lack data on species' current distribution, status, potential management deficiencies protected areas (PAs) harboring lions. Our study synthesized available expert opinion field close this knowledge gap, formulate recommendations We undertook surveys 13 large (>500 km2) PAs compiled evidence presence/absence further eight PAs. All were situated within Lion Conservation Units, geographical units designated as priority wildlife experts at regional workshop 2005. Lions confirmed only 4 PAs, our results suggest that 406 (273–605) remain representing <250 mature individuals. Confirmed range estimated 49,000 km2, or 1.1% historical Africa. retaining larger than without had significantly higher budgets. encourage revision taxonomy, recognize highlight potentially unique value. Further, we call listing critically endangered under criterion C2a(ii) with Finally, considering relative poverty states urgent mobilization investment international community assist increase effectiveness
