Abstract Sessile organisms contend with locally limiting nutrients and neighbours. Increases in nutrient concentration due to niche construction diffusion of resources change the interaction sign between neighbours usually thought compete for resources. We investigate conditions under which positive effect outweighs negative resource consumption. Following design facilitation experiments, we model two patches connected by flows, ask whether presence a constructor one patch eases colonisation other. Niche constructors positively affect neighbouring when their niches are sufficiently differentiated, constructed diffuses more than non-constructed resource. Our work proposes mechanisms emergence facilitation, is increasingly recognised as key process structuring plant microbial communities. discuss implications spatial structure communities functioning, including an agricultural context.

Sessile organisms, such as plants, contend with locally limiting nutrients and neighbours. By consuming or increasing local concentration by niche construction, they alter the conditions of growth in their environment. Microbial communities perform various functions, many of which contribute to ecosystem-level nutrient cycling via decomposition. Factors influencing leaf detrital decomposition are well understood in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, but much less is known about arthropod inputs. Here, we sought infer how differences detritus affect microbial-driven community function a carnivorous pitcher plant,

Abstract Biodiversity is an essential component for ecosystem functioning and stability, with numerous biotic interactions complementarity playing important roles. The complexity of these relationships can be seen in both above‐ belowground ecosystems understanding intricate between biodiversity (BEF) critical to ecological research, especially the context rapidly changing global environments. This review synthesizes contemporary research fundamental insights into BEF linkages, a particular emphasis on function plant‐microbial shaping aboveground their cascading effects processes. One most significant developments discovery that microbial communities responsible variety soil functions are inextricably linked plant However, studies rarely explore components, as well how change affects them. In light this, we propose emerging paths future study, emphasizing necessity global‐scale networks collaborative efforts address difficult challenges. Addressing crucial knowledge gaps might help improve our interplay biodiversity, functions, thereby improving primary productivity resilience sustainability face projected change.
