Abstract Reservoirs transform the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of rivers, altering their flow dynamics availability nutrients. After a river is dammed, species composition in reservoir its tributaries tend to change response new conditions which are generated. This work investigates tributary rivers sites along main channel Tocantins River’s middle course. The study was conducted between 2009 2013 pre- post-dam periods evaluate effects dam on phytoplankton. area located course River, where Estreito hydroelectric power plant found. variables ammonium, nitrate inorganic phosphorous were those that most contributed environmental variation post-damming. richness classes phytoplankton higher during pre-dam period, dry season, environment river’s channel. stood out Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae Cyanophyceae. We verified damming River negatively affected communities, reducing density period. results showed with largest contributions beta diversity found be common abundant ones, suggesting has led loss sensitive specialist species.
