Plastic pollution is ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. waste exposed to the environment creates problems of significant concern for all life forms. production accumulation natural are occurring at an unprecedented rate due indiscriminate use, inadequate recycling, deposits landfills. In 2019, global plastic was 370 million tons, with only 9% it being recycled, 12% incinerated, remaining left or The leakage wastes into ecosystems rate. management a challenging problem researchers, policymakers, citizens, other stakeholders. Therefore, here, we summarize current understanding concerns plastics (microplastics nanoplastics) on overall goal this review provide background assessment adverse effects ecosystems; interlink sustainable development goals; address policy initiatives under transdisciplinary approaches through cycle assessment, circular economy, sustainability; identify knowledge gaps; recommendations. community involvement socio-economic inputs different countries presented discussed. ban policies public awareness likely major mitigation interventions. need circularity assess potential environmental impacts resources used throughout product’s span emphasized. Significance Microplastic particles and fibers generated from the breakdown of mismanaged waste are now so prevalent that they cycle through earth in a manner akin to global biogeochemical cycles. In modeling atmospheric limb plastic cycle, we show most plastics derived legacy production has continued build up environment. Roads dominated sources microplastics western United States, followed by marine, agriculture, dust emissions downwind population centers. At current rate increase (∼4% per year), understanding consequences atmosphere should be priority.

Plastic pollution is a new, pressing, environmental topic. Microplastics are considered contaminants of emerging concern and, consequently, microplastic research has grown exponentially in the last decade. Here, current knowledge regarding impacts micro- and nanoplastics on terrestrial plants aquatic macrophytes discussed, with special focus adsorption, uptake toxicological effects. Our review reveals that range can adsorb or internalise plastic particles. Both processes depend particle characteristics such as size charge, well plant features including sticky hydrophobic surface layer. This finding given at bottom food webs crucial component human diet. Therefore, there critical need for improved understanding nanoplastics, consequences thereof trophic transfer, safety security. Also, stress responses have been observed many macrophyte species after both short long-term exposures to Given some particles affect productivity, we surmise may potentially impact ecosystem productivity function. Here present synthesis evaluation state macrophytes, identifying key questions future research.
