The

Marine
Protected
Area
(MPA),
situated
on
the
continental
shelf
of
KwaZulu-Natal
(KZN)
Bight
northeastern
coast
South
Africa,
has
been
identified
as
a
vital
ecological
region.
Knowledge
oceanographic
dynamics
in
region
is
essential
for
understanding
functioning
ecosystem
and
effectiveness
MPA.
This
study
analysed
ocean
temperature
variability
at
20
sites
across
KZN
Bight,
between
1980
2021,
using
situ
satellite
data.
Significant
warming
an
average
0.03
°C
y−1
period
occurred
within
around
Coastal
sea
surface
temperatures
warmed
by
0.02
y−1,
during
both
summer
winter.
However,
persistent
decrease
along
length
2017/2018
could
have
significant
consequences
temperature-sensitive
species.

importance
long-term
spatially
extensive
monitoring

investigating
climate
change

Kelp
forests
are
among
the
most
valuable
ecosystems
on
Earth,
but
they
increasingly
being
degraded
and
lost
due
to
a
range
of
human‐related
stressors,

Abstract
Marine
protected
areas
(MPAs)
are
widely
implemented
tools
for
long‐term
ocean
conservation
and
resource
management.
Assessments

MPA
performance
have

focused
on
specific
ecosystems
individually

evaluated

multiple

an
individual
or
network.
