Abstract. Land planning projects aiming to maximise soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are increasing in number and scope. In response, a rising of studies assess SOC additional storage capacities over regional global spatial scales. order provide realistic values transferrable beyond the scientific community, capacity assessments should consider timescales which this might be reached, considering effects C inputs, type depth on dynamics. This research was conducted 320 km2 territory North-eastern France where eight contrasted types have been identified, characterized mapped thanks high density fully-described profiles. Continuous profiles were interpolated for each land use (cropland, grassland or forest). Depth-dependent estimates maximum using Hassink equation data-driven approach compared. We used novel method that uses constrain inputs simple model depth-dependent dynamics simulate accrual 25 years, stocks, stock evolution. highly heterogenous region study. Median range from 78–333 tC ha-1. Data-driven vary 19 ha-1 forested Leptosols 197 Gleysols. Estimations based led unrealistic vertical distributions stock, with particular overestimation deeper layers. Crucially, simulated years five times lower than (0.57 2.5 MgC respectively). Further consideration different is therefore needed targets relevant public policies neutrality by 2050.
