Context
Rising
demand
from
Vietnam
for
Lao
goat
meat
has
triggered

rapid
increase
in
numbers

Qualitative
research
was
conducted
to
explore
role

farmers’
livelihood
strategies

farming
systems,

inform
development
approaches

husbandry
productivity.
Methods
Semi-structured
interviews
were
with
30
across
five
villages
southern-central
Laos.
Interview
transcripts
analysed
using
grounded
theory
methodology
assistance
of
Nvivo
12
software
program.
Key
results
The
showed
goats
profitable
liquid
asset
farmers.
Income
used
small
expenses
occurred
frequently
or
at
short
notice,
such
household
loans
debts,
utility
medical
costs
buying
food
clothing
family
members.
Goats
had
socio-cultural
purposes,
some
preferring
consume
during
celebratory
occasions
over
other
livestock
species.
Managing
easy
benefited
wider
system
by
providing
manure
fertilise
crop
plantations.
Conclusions
Goat
productivity
goats’
unique
subsistence
roles
can
be
enhanced
improving
kid
management,
goat-house
design
cleaning,
implementing
disease
management.

activities
