: Orenburg goats are renowned for their soft down that acts as a substrate warm clothing, particularly shawls have an international reputation. As with many local livestock breeds, however, the is presently at risk of extinction, issue can be addressed by assessing population genetic diversity and, thereafter, encouraging much outbreeding possible. Using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based data, therefore, we analyzed and structure modern using samples collected from expedition to Oblast in 2024.

Context Rising demand from Vietnam for Lao goat meat has triggered a rapid increase in numbers Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). Despite the increased market opportunity smallholder farmers Laos, production remains low input within free-grazing management systems. Aims Qualitative research was conducted to explore role that plays farmers’ livelihood strategies and farming systems, including benefits associated trade-offs, so as inform development approaches improve husbandry productivity. Methods Semi-structured interviews were with 30 across five villages southern-central Laos. Interview transcripts analysed using grounded theory methodology assistance of Nvivo 12 software program. Key results The showed goats profitable liquid asset farmers. Income used small expenses occurred frequently or at short notice, such household loans debts, utility medical costs buying food clothing family members. Goats had socio-cultural purposes, some preferring consume during celebratory occasions over other livestock species. Managing easy benefited wider system by providing manure fertilise crop plantations. Conclusions Goat productivity goats’ unique subsistence roles can be enhanced improving kid management, goat-house design cleaning, implementing disease management. These activities input. Implications government policy future projects Laos should focus on increasing rather than scale enterprises. majority may not benefit significantly their enterprises because trade-offs damaging crops becoming lost involved accidents dog attacks car accidents.
