It remains unclear how variation in the intensity of sperm competition shapes phenotypic and molecular evolution across clades. Mice rats subfamily Murinae are a rapid radiation exhibiting incredible diversity morphology production. We combined genomic data to perform phylogenetic comparisons male reproductive traits genes 78 murine species. identified several shifts towards smaller relative testes mass, presumably reflecting reduced competition. Several were associated with suggesting that mating system selects for convergent suites related competitive ability. predicted would also drive more divergence species large testes. Contrary this, we found many spermatogenesis evolved rapidly mass due relaxed purifying selection. While some under recurrent positive selection, selection played greater role underlying small Our work demonstrates postcopulatory sexual can impose strong shaping reproduction, broad patterns may help identify contribute fertility.

In most murine species, spermatozoa exhibit a falciform apical hook at the head end. The function of sperm is not yet clearly understood. this study, we investigate role in migration through female reproductive tract Mus musculus (C57BL/6), using deep tissue imaging custom-built two-photon microscope. Through live imaging, found evidence indicating that aids attachment to epithelium and facilitates interactions between during uterus oviduct. We also observed synchronized beating, which resulted from spontaneous unidirectional rearrangement uterus. Based on spermatozoa-epithelium interaction dynamics, propose plays crucial successful by providing anchor-like mechanical support facilitating house mouse.

Abstract Sperm are one of the most morphologically diverse cell types in nature, yet they also exhibit remarkable behavioral variation, including formation collective groups cells that swim together for motility or transport through female reproductive tract. Here we take advantage natural variation sperm traits observed across Peromyscus mice to test hypothesis morphology rodent head influences their aggregation behavior. Using machine learning and traditional morphometric approaches quantify analyze complex shapes, show elongation is distinguishing morphological trait these rodents and, as predicted, significantly associates with movements obtained from vitro observations. We then successfully use neural network analysis predict size proportion aggregates species whose feature relatively wider heads aggregate more often form larger groups, providing support theoretical prediction an adhesive region around equatorial mediates unique gametic interactions. Together findings advance our understanding how even subtle design can drive differences function performance. Subject Areas Evolution, Cellular Biology, Behavior
