Abstract Catch‐and‐release (C&R) is a popular management tool that can support sustainable development of recreational fisheries, if anglers adopt scientifically informed “best practices.” However, although the role best practices widely established in academic literature, this knowledge not always disseminated to anglers. In paper, we investigated and what extent local organizations provided practice information Based on sample 331 Swedish organizations, reviewed websites through which these sold fishing licenses. Our review demonstrated widespread use C&R as yet general lack information. Among small fraction mentioned practices, most only single practice, with little consistency among received attention. addition, was particularly lacking for pike ( Esox Lucius ) perch Perca fluviatilis ), are by far landed released species nationally. We discovered major deficiencies provide insights about where how focus efforts improving information, context fisheries management.

Abstract Marine recreational fishing (MRF) is a socially and economically relevant activity in Europe, but its impacts on ecosystems the economy remain poorly understood, management limited. This paper evaluates current European fisheries governance, particularly Common Fishery Policy, addressing MRF issues. Our evaluation highlights lack of explicit recognition Union legislation, where are not or insufficiently managed within commercial fisheries-oriented policy framework. We recommend reform that explicitly recognizes as distinct sector with own interests, values objectives, dynamics differ from those typical fisheries. On operational level, we involving key organizations representing interests advisory groups dealing marine fisheries, nature conservation, spatial use, encourage sustainable practices among all types To achieve this, there need for better more comprehensive data collection, stakeholder engagement, outreach to support effective governance management. By these issues, Europe can maximize benefits MRF, while ensuring sustainability
