Restoring wetlands is often used by management to boost ecosystem services like improving downstream water quality, but it may create ecological traps for migrating salmonids increasing migration time and predation rates, potentially compromising self‐sustaining populations. In River Gudenaa, Denmark, the wild Brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) population has declined over past one two decades, remains unclear whether this decrease linked higher mortality due restored in river's lower reaches. This study investigated progression rates survival of smolts through Gudenaa Randers Fjord before after wetland restoration using acoustic telemetry. 2020 2021, 150 were tagged released, their movements compared with those 61 released restoration, 2003 2005. Smolt significantly slower river fjord greatest reduction river. Despite did not impact survival, suggesting act as an trap smolts. However, unknown had carryover effects on sea energy expenditure delaying arrival. The retention a main channel, directed albeit flow, likely kept from venturing into adjacent lakes, where be higher. By incorporating measures that support fish, can remain valuable tool secure while sustaining fish

Abstract Telemetry is commonly employed to track animals and support ecological inferences, yet the possibility that tagged have died or shed their tags often not fully considered. Neglecting consider mortality and/or tag shedding can lead biases in interpretation of results. We introduce R package mort , developed identify potential mortalities passive telemetry arrays. was designed for aquatic acoustic receivers with primarily non‐overlapping detection radii, but methods be applied any study uses tracking (i.e. stationary receivers). describe primary functions key options are supported, provide guidance on general use package, demonstrate three case studies. The thresholds either user‐defined derived from dataset itself (using observed durations residences known alive). This flexibility, along numerous customizable options, allows application multiple species systems. fills an important gap standardized workflows when processing analysing data. a useful tool will improve reproducibility research management decisions rely results telemetry.
