Know Your Lanes: Unpacking Theoretical Plurality Across Studies of Professions DOI

Abstract Professions continue to be central understanding organizing in the 21st century. The literature on professions is segmented into theoretical conversations that offer different conceptualizations of and concerns. Through an analysis literature, we unpack four lanes – teleological, institutional, ecological, cultural co‐exist make up professions. We synthesize generated within each lane, identify key distinctions across lanes, assess future potential noting where there space for contribution. Beyond making dominant paradigms, their plurality, recognizable, encourage researchers move beyond studying qua articulate role impact organizations society. seven proposals enlivening research agenda professions, including prioritizing real‐world problems outcomes over paradigmatic perspectives.
