Abstract Ocean warming is driving profound changes in the ecology of marine habitat formers such as kelps, with negative implications for biodiversity and ecosystem services they support. Thermal stress can disturb associated microbiota that are essential to healthy functioning kelp, but little known about how this process influences early‐life stages. Because kelps have a biphasic life cycle, thermal dynamics adult sporophyte may not reflect those free‐living haploid gametophyte. We investigated role microbial disruption under on gametophytes kelp Ecklonia radiata compared gametophyte microbiota. The changed significantly when microbiome was disrupted increased temperature (26°C), which putative generalist bacterial taxa proliferated families nitrogen fixation decreased. Concurrently, survival decreased <10%, surviving did become fertile disrupted. length both stress. Taken together, suggests important their survival, fertility, response warming. Gametophyte parental were also distinct from water column each other, suggesting vertical transmission one stage next. This study furthers our understanding tolerance well acquisition microbiota, prove vital protecting increasing resilience these foundation species.
