Taxonomic Revision of Ningshan Odd-Scaled Snake, Achalinus ningshanensis (Serpentes, Xenodermidae), with Description of a New Subspecies from Western China

Achalinu ningshanensis (Yang, Huang, Jiang, Burbrink, and 2022) was first described in Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province, China 2022, based on seven female specimens. In this study, phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA (12S), 16S (16S), cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1), b (cyt b) gene fragments, morphological examinations of specimens, we revise the taxonomic status A. ningshanensis, provide additional data species. The molecular phylogeny indicated that is nested a highly supported monophyletic group, forming sister taxon to spinalis, divided into two well-supported lineages, A B, with an uncorrected p-distance between lineages from 3.6 4.3% for CO1. Therefore, proposed Lineage B western Sichuan southwestern new subspecies, Achalinus occidentalis ssp. nov., southern northeastern allocated as ningshanensis. Morphologically, subspecies can be distinguished its congeners, especially by following characteristics: (1) tail relatively short, TAL/TL ratio 0.202–0.226 males, 0.155–0.178 females; (2) there are pairs chin-shields; (3) 21–22 maxillary teeth; (4) length suture internasals significantly shorter than prefrontals, LSBI/LSBP 0.502–0.773; (5) six supralabials, fourth fifth contact eye; (6) five infralabials, third or touches pair (7) one hexagonal loreal, LorH/LorL 0.612–1.040; (8) anterior temporals (9) 155–160 ventrals 165–174 (10) 60–65 subcaudals 49–53 females, which not paired; (11) dorsum iridescent uniformly charcoal black, lacks longitudinal vertebral line, has dark brown gray ventral area.
