ABSTRACT Aims Alpine valleys have faced escalating global changes in recent decades such as a decline of traditional management and rural expansion. Grasslands are likely the type vegetation most affected by these transformations. This study investigates multifaceted plant diversity over past four major valley Italian Eastern Alps examines whether occurred uniformly across different elevations. Location Valsugana Valley, Alps, Italy. Methods In 2022, we resurveyed 115 plots (including vascular plants, mosses, lichens) originally sampled 1986–1988. Plots were collected grasslands span along an elevation gradient 2000 m. At each time period, automatically classified using EUNIS expert system habitats. We analysed variation species richness, diversity, beta (turnover nestedness), relative proportion life form, woodiness, neophyte gradient, subdivided low‐, middle‐, high‐elevation belts. Lastly, quantified number gained, winning, stable, losing, lost species. Results found differences classification habitats elevation‐dependent community composition. Many grassland types transformed into other or forests man‐made Species richness varied time, being constant at lower elevations but markedly increasing high Temporal turnover dominated elevations, especially sites, while nestedness components increased towards Neophytes hemicryptophytes decreased low‐elevation belt, therophytes geophytes low‐ middle‐elevation many dry replaced nitrophilous woody High‐elevation witnessed replacement with loss mountain increase therophyte geophyte Conclusions undergone substantial decades. Different processes acted gradient. Nonetheless driver, impoverishment semi‐natural was observed Understanding is essential for comprehensive evaluation ecological variations time. Conservation strategies should be tailored to address biodiversity varying counteract negative trends ongoing habitat transformation Alps.

Aims : To test the predictive power of mean ecological indicator values (EIVs) based on different EIV systems and weighting approaches. Study area Preda in Grisons, Switzerland. Methods We used three regional datasets vegetation plots accompanied with measured soil pH or annual near air temperature. calculated EIVs for each plot four that cover region, namely “Ellenberg”, “Landolt”, “Tichý” Ecological Indicator Values Europe (EIVE), combined approaches (unweighted, cover-weighted, square-root inverse niche width weighted). correlated combination environmental variables compared Pearson r values. Results No cover-weighting (0.78) was slightly better than (0.75) clearly full (0.68). In two providing a measure (EIVE “Landolt”), gave similar results no weighting. Mean EIVE (0.76) had significantly stronger correlations (0.73), while differences to “Ellenberg” “Landolt” (0.71) were not significant. Conclusions The suggest even within definition areas long-established (“Ellenberg”, gives at least as good predictions these “Tichý”. Likewise, any type reduces EIVs. Both findings could be consequence statistical principle “wisdom crowd”, according which average estimate several sources (be it scientists plant species) is usually one few experts. Accordingly, currently best choice Europe, should applied. recommend studies undertaken other regions dimensions. Syntaxonomic reference Mucina et al. (2016). Recent studies have explored the ecological relationship between native urban forests and self-sown non-native in large cities metropolises but further research efforts dedicated to analyzing this small are still needed. To improve our understanding of ecology alien Mediterranean cities, we analyzed woody species richness, community-weight mean moisture nitrogen indicators, soil disturbance indicators main wood types city Campobasso (Italy), as well their spatial distribution pattern across a gradient cover aggregation green areas. The study showed that both oak Robinia pseudoacacia contributed maintenance richness. If exclude riparian environment, R. occupied marginal patches, tolerating high frequency, thus occupying habitats where could not grow. Conversely, shared niche with forests, which calls for action prevent spread along river banks. Our results highlighted remnant should be considered important assets planning upkeep
