Abstract Background The growing shortage of General Practitioners (GPs) is a Europe-wide challenge, particularly in rural areas. In Germany, the situation worsened by an ageing workforce GPs and insufficient training new doctors. Many newly qualified physicians choose careers outside primary care or prefer to work part-time balance family life. Methods March 2021, we started ongoing online survey among students at University Würzburg assessed cross-sectional data ‘Big Five’ aspects choice. Until December 2022, invited three cohorts first-year beginners, one cohort each third-, fifth- sixth-year via email participate survey. For statistical analysis, performed linear regression extended into path model relationship traits, Practice, whether they would currently for future controlled possible confounding effects age, gender, semester using covariates. Results Higher levels predicted greater GPs, whereas higher less were unclear. Age was significant predictor interest, with older age associated Practice. Gender not results inconclusive.
