Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the career trajectories two teachers in United States and their decision leave teaching Spanish. Data for emerged from teachers’ narratives about school‐based experiences consequences those on decisions reorient work educational community. We adopted theoretical framework history person analyze interactions between own personal histories with institutions which they taught. collection began during student‐teaching semester continued 5 years after initial induction into language profession included interviews email communications. context North Carolina, a state experiencing severe teacher shortage conflicts regarding compensation. Findings highlight challenges these faced how historically institutionalized struggles were consequential professional futures. Implications research, policy, preparation are discussed.
