Spring regrowth in temperate perennials relies on renewal buds, which form a key component the shoot growth cycle. Still, we possess almost no information these is becoming more pressing with current climate change. Most existing studies concentrated easy-to-study aboveground buds of woody plants, whose morphology has largely been linked to frost protection. It not clear what extent findings apply also herbaceous species. We therefore examined protective traits and preformation winter 379 species herbs, tested how are distributed across phylogeny related other bud bank whole-plant traits. identified major gradient from few, large, highly preformed, scale-covered associated larger belowground storage organs deep soil, small, numerous, less naked near soil surface. Belowground herbs show several distinct strategies for survival spring that might affect their response changing early conditions. Root sprouting (RS), i.e. the ability to form adventitious buds on roots, is an important of clonal growth in a number species, and serves as both survival strategy means spatial expansion, particularly plants growing severely recurrently disturbed habitats. Occurrence and/or success habitats are determined by two components, namely produce roots vigour their production. As mechanisms behind different magnitudes RS remain unclear, our study investigates: (1) whether presence or absence specific tissues can promote limit RS; (2) there some relationship between ability, species niche. We studied together with 182 Central European herbaceous under controlled experimental conditions. We used phylogenetic logistic regressions model RS, vigour, anatomical traits parameters niches.A quarter herbs examined were able roots. They characterized preference for open dry habitats, secondary root thickening occurrence sclerified cortical cells was not associated any pattern, but correlated environmental niches indicating that preferred might represent selection pressure more vigorous sprouters than undisturbed wet habitats. Our shows from quite common temperate dicotyledonous herbs. Two components - should be considered separately future studies. would also like focus attention other regions well external forces internal regulating evolution functions

Plants rely on roots for absorption of nutrients from the soil. Differences in traits fine and root system general thus underlie differences among individual species their ability to live habitats differing nutrient status interactions with other species. Here we examine what extent structure is determined by whole‐plant parameters, namely expected life span rooting units (either genetic individuals or ramets clonally growing plants) type belowground nonacquisitive organs such as rhizomes. By using phylogenetic comparative techniques confirm existence two independent directions variation traits, fast–slow continuum cooperation show that associated increasing lifespan plant's (from annuals stoloniferous through rhizomatous up nonclonal perennial species). Lifespan unit determines a range mass fraction (proportion total biomass) tissue density. This shared correlated environment where typically occur, fast end (annual species) occurring productive disturbed, slow (nonclonal perennials) unproductive habitats. Further, clonal have slightly shallower thinner are relieved transport function which served horizontal stem‐derived (stolons rhizomes). confirms plant must be considered determinants (fine) herbs.
