ABSTRACT Pair bonds are a hallmark of many monogamous species, yet in the California mouse ( Peromyscus californicus ) pair‐bond formation is poorly understood. While pair often assumed to be present after week cohabitation, when they actually form this species debated. To characterize bond latency mice, we conducted three‐chamber partner preference tests for both males and females following 1, 3, 5, or 7 days cohabitation. Since copulation may contribute formation, animals were paired estrus assessed continuously throughout cohabitation period copulatory behavior. We found evidence 24 h sexes with no significant changes behaviors across periods. Focal spent more time partner's chamber, affiliative toward than stranger displayed aggressive behavior stranger. Affiliative consistent between sexes, while attacked frequently longer durations females. Pairs that copulated prior partner‐preference testing chamber huddling, licking, grooming their mate those did not copulate. conclude although necessary sexual receptivity at pairing important development these social relationships serve enhance mice.
