ABSTRACT Dormancy is usually understood as a strategy for coping with extrinsic environmental variation, but intrinsic population fluctuations also create conditions where dormancy adaptive. By analysing simple models, we show that favour the evolution of dormancy, stabilises dynamics. This sets up feedback loop can enable coexistence alternative strategies. Over longer timescales, to an evolutionary stable state drive populations edge stability, dynamics are only weakly stabilised. We briefly consider how these conclusions likely apply in more complex community contexts. Our results suggest chaos and high‐amplitude cycles highly vulnerable invasion subsequent stabilisation by potentially explaining their rarity. At same time, propensity ecological fluctuate may be underappreciated driver dormancy.
