COVID-19 risk perception and public compliance with preventive measures: Evidence from a multi-wave household survey in the MENA region

This
study
investigates
the
association
between
individuals'
concern
about
contracting
COVID-19
and
their
compliance
with
recommended
preventive
mitigation
measures,
namely
wearing
face
masks,
maintaining
social
distancing
handwashing,
in
context
of
Middle
East
North
Africa
(MENA)
region.
The
empirical
analysis
is
based
on
a
panel
dataset
from
Combined
MENA
Monitor
Household
Survey,
which
was
carried
out
Jordan,
Morocco,
Sudan,
Tunisia
Egypt.
Applying
probit
estimation
technique,
positive
statistically
significant
found
level
worries
measures.
Notably,
results
revealed
that
this
followed
"first-up-then-down"
trend,
showing
three
measures
rose
as
virus
increased,
then
markedly
decreased
after
they
had
been
infected.
Socio-demographic
characteristics
contributing
to
lower
levels
included
being
male,
over
60,
having
education
household
income.
A
cross-country
remarkable
differences
five
countries,

Abstract
The
COVID-19
pandemic
had
disruptive
consequences
for
MENA
countries’
agri-food
value
chains
that
exacerbated
poverty
and
jeopardized
food
security.
This
study
examines
the
relationship
between
individuals’
perception
of
contracting
their
experience
insecurity,
using
longitudinal
data
from
Combined
Monitor
Household
survey.
It
also
investigates
underlying
mechanisms
concerns

coping
strategies
employed
by
households
to
identify
vulnerabilities
in
