ABSTRACT Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity has widespread research applications but poses measurement challenges due to its high sensitivity environmental conditions and immediate demands. While standardised methods exist for measuring PNS reactivity recovery in response stressors, the selection of appropriate baseline resting states is often overlooked. This commentary argues that a clearer conceptual distinction between baseline, construct comparing values, rest, psychophysiological state low arousal cognitive engagement, crucial data interpretation. includes need explicitly justifying relation goals validating rest conditions. By improving clarity rigour researchers can enhance interpretability measures, supporting integration findings across studies.

ABSTRACT Sleep is a key biological mechanism in promoting wellbeing and resilience to stress. This cross‐sectional study examined connections between sleep, autonomic function, wellbeing, stress reactivity healthy individuals. Demographic, lifestyle, psychological well‐being information were collected from 85 university students. These variables analysed conjunction with indices of cardiac activity, including heart rate high frequency variability (HF HRV, an indicator parasympathetic vagal tone) recorded during nocturnal sleep onset response cognitive stressor. Correlational analyses revealed that unrefreshing fragmented was strongly associated lower HF HRV at onset, suggestive poorer de‐arousal. Further, those minimal increases wakefulness reported worse quality greater challenges daily activities compared significant increases. same group also demonstrated significantly slower recovery when faced stressor the next day, as evidenced by comparison values. Our findings suggest association hypervigilance aspects quality, potential implications for responses.
