Introduction Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common pregnancy complication, caused by placental insufficiency, with serious adverse consequences for development in utero and postnatal wellbeing. There are no antenatal treatments to improve or organ FGR, animal models essential mimic the physiological adaptations FGR assess potential interventions. This study aimed identify temporal nature of reduced developmental trajectory fetuses examine effects factors that may mediate differential such as glucocorticoid treatment. We hypothesised would be adversely impacted FGR. Methods was induced via surgical insufficiency fetal sheep (89 days gestation/0.6 gestation; n=135) compared age-matched controls over last third gestation into neonatal life (n=153). Results Body weight fetuses/lambs significantly (p<0.0001) from 127 (term 148 days), increased brain:body ratio indicative brain sparing. All biometric measures body size were group exception biparietal (head) diameter. The trimester controls, stillbirth rate longer gestation. Discussion work provides well characterised model mimics known human can used determine efficacy

Background: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) corresponds to the fetus’s inability achieve an adequate weight gain based on genetic potential and gestational age. It is important cause of morbidity mortality. Summary: In this review, we address challenges diagnosis classification FGR. We review how chronic fetal hypoxia impacts brain development. describe recent advances placental imaging using magnetic resonance they offer new noninvasive means study in humans. go impact FGR integrity neonatal period, later childhood, adulthood available therapies. Key Messages: consequences are not limited perinatal period. hypothesize that impaired reserve, as defined by structure size, may predict some concerning epidemiological data cognitive outcomes dementia with aging group patients.
