Microbes associated with an organism can significantly modulate its susceptibility to viral infections, but our understanding of the influence individual microbes remains limited. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a model that in nature inhabits environments rich bacteria. Here, we examine impact 71 naturally bacteria on C . only known natural virus, Orsay virus. Our findings reveal infection influenced by monobacterial environments. Compared Escherichia coli environmental reference, majority tested reduced infection. This reduction not caused virion degradation or poor animal nutrition repression bacterial strains Chryseobacterium JUb44 and Sphingobacterium BIGb0172 does require RIG-I homolog DRH-1, which activate antiviral responses such as RNA interference transcriptional regulation. research highlights necessity considering biotic studies opens way future host-microbe-virus interactions.
