Abstract Vertical buoy lines (VBLs) between surface markers and bottom fishing gear frequently entangle large whales. These lethal sublethal entanglements inhibit North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) recovery. Consequently, the use of persistent VBLs in situations high entanglement risk off east coasts USA Canada is periodically prohibited. On demand, acoustic recovery systems make it possible to remove VBLs, reducing risk, potentially allowing fisheries operate such areas. To address concerns about performance, reliability, safety, we evaluated numerous on-demand under normal conditions. In 2020, conservationists, scientists, engineers, lobster harvesters designed an experiment trial New England offshore fisheries, using open honest dialogue while maintaining confidentiality data as locations. Between 2020 2023, 38 captains their crews completed 5798 hauls 431 units representing 10 different prototypes from multiple manufacturers. The geographic area expanded limited areas inshore, nearshore, waters four management 2022 2023. Trawl lengths ranged 1 100 traps per trawl. Recovery success increased 64% 90% through trials, although challenges remain, especially when deep or current tide locales. A parallel study underway Canada. ability ensure sustainable significantly becoming a reality, with snow crabs lobsters being sold Jonah that were caught experimental permits primarily where are seasonally prohibited for conservation.
