Abstract National parks are key for conserving biodiversity and supporting people's well‐being. However, anthropogenic pressures challenge the existence of national their conservation effectiveness. Therefore, it is crucial to assess how people perceive in order enhance socio‐political support conservation. User‐generated data shared by visitors on social media provide opportunities understand (e.g. preferences, feelings, opinions) during nature‐based recreational experiences. In this study, we applied methods from automated natural language processing visitors' sentiment when describing experiences Instagram posts geolocated inside four South Africa. We found that was positive, mostly included emotions such as joy, anticipation, trust surprise, with only a small occurrence negative feelings. Appreciation nature, association diverse set other aspects, activities, geographical features tourist attractions, used describe related wilderness, travelling, holidays adventures. Protected areas (PAs) are a cornerstone of global conservation and central to international plans minimize extinctions. During the coming century, ecosystem destruction fragmentation associated with increased human population economic activity could make long-term survival most terrestrial vertebrates even more dependent on PAs. However, capacity current PA network sustain species for long term is unknown. Here, we explore this question all nonvolant mammals which found sufficient data, ∼4,000 species. We first estimate potential size each such mammal in then use three different criteria if solely PAs might be their survival. Our analyses suggest that may fail provide robust protection about half analyzed, including currently listed as threatened extinction third not threatened. Hundreds appear have no viable protected populations. Underprotected were across body sizes, taxonomic groups, geographic regions. Large-bodied mammals, endemic species, those high-biodiversity tropical regions particularly poorly by existing As new biodiversity targets formulated, our results must greatly expanded importantly located diverse encompass large enough ensure can persist term.

The destruction of natural vegetation in recent decades has been concentrated the tropics, where ecosystem processes underpin global homeostasis and harbor most world’s biodiversity. Protected areas (PAs) are primary societal tool to avoid this destruction, yet their effectiveness is often questioned. Here, we quantified impact PAs indigenous lands avoiding 34 years forested nonforested biomes Brazil. We showed that odds PA network four times lower than unprotected areas, generally, positive effect extends a buffer zone around PAs. Among effective groups those older, larger, located Amazonian region, lands. Despite setbacks for Brazilian system, highlight benefits biodiversity climate if they were instead strengthened.

Significance Conservation scientists warn of the threat to area-based conservation posed by renewable energy infrastructure. Here, we show that current and near-term overlap two land uses need not be as severe previously suggested. This is important, global efforts decarbonize systems are central mitigating against climate change strong negative impacts projected on biodiversity.
