Solar cells based on organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have emerged as the most efficient next-generation thin-film solar within just a decade of research and show great promise for commercialization. As control microstructure layer is key factor enabling high photovoltaic efficiency, good stability, successful up-scaling high-quality thin films commercialization, reliable accurate characterization paramount. X-ray diffraction (XRD)-based techniques, including conventional laboratory-based XRD synchrotron-based grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering, are widely used to probe films. Nevertheless, it common these experiments be poorly executed data improperly interpreted. This review focuses principles techniques their application microstructure. Fundamentals presented with strong emphasis best practices in collection analysis. Approaches extraction microstructural information from discussed, need simulating patterns. Applications characterizing demonstrated both three-dimensional layered perovskites, covering various aspects phase identification quantification, texture analysis, microstrain, macrostrain well situ operando characterization. The additional subtleties complexities associated perovskites due more complex discussed. Common mistakes pitfalls that lead misinterpretation also highlighted.

Stable but not quite cubic The black, photoactive phase of formamidinium (FA) perovskites, which is usually stabilized by cation alloying to avoid the formation inactive hexagonal phases, assumed be cubic. High-resolution microscopy studies Doherty et al . using nanoscale probes revealed that these FA-rich phases are rather undergo slight tilting (by two degrees) octahedra. Black can have localized regions nucleate degradation. Surface-bound ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tilted pure FA lead triiodide against environmental —PDS
