ABSTRACT Biotic interactions play an important role in species diversification and maintenance and, thus, are regarded as the architecture of biodiversity. Since Darwin Wallace, biologists have debated whether biotic stronger towards tropics on continents, when compared to temperate regions islands. Here, based 354 avian frugivory networks accounting for 22,199 between 1247 bird 2126 plant species, we quantified trait matching strength, which reflects interaction strength specificity, across gradients latitude insularity globally. We found that beak size fruit was significantly poles with As underlining ecological factors, a larger proportion (measured mean fruits diets) network‐level size, smaller fleshy‐fruited botanical country where network located). These findings suggest latitudinal insular patterns driven by factors may relate co‐evolution interacting optimal foraging species.

Abstract Seed dispersal by frugivores is a crucial step of the life cycle most plants, influencing plant population and community dynamics. Although very important for ecosystems, we are just beginning to understand which mechanisms driving frugivore‐mediated seed dispersal. Most studies identifying drivers use interaction frequency as proxy estimating success, rather than looking at functional outcomes those interactions (e.g., contributions successful germination). A valuable tool link plant–frugivore success effectiveness (SDE) framework, accounts quantity quality components We evaluated mechanisms, including morphological traits, trait matching phenological overlap interacting species, well degree frugivory feeding behaviour frugivores, influenced (interaction number seeds dispersed per visit) (seed germination after gut passage) SDE. ABSTRACT Trait matching, the phenomenon where ecological interactions are mediated by compatibility, constitutes a cornerstone of frugivore–fruit interaction network dynamics. Given that biotic have long been hypothesized to be more intense or specialized in tropics, intensity trait matching patterns might likewise exhibit latitudinal gradient frugivory networks, yet this remains unverified. Here, we established dataset encompassing 200 avian frugivorous networks explore relationships between body mass and gape size frugivore birds fruit traits (size color) on global scale. Our results indicated were closely associated with regardless climate, demonstrating match two counterparts. We detected significant decrease toward which challenges prevailing concepts considering high biodiversity therein. structural equation modeling clarified latitude temperature exert an indirect influence affecting traits. These discoveries emphasize impact driving observed matching. The weaker tropical regions may suggest complex therein also highlights potential for altered structures amid climate change.

Populations at the edge of a species' distribution often encounter more challenging environmental conditions than those core, requiring unique adaptations and strategies. However, demographic processes driving these populations remain poorly understood. This study aims to understand population stability hibernating edible dormouse under in two Iberian populations: Montseny Montnegre. Despite their geographic proximity, Montnegre is demographically isolated faces harsher environment characterized by drier climate forests with lower deciduous tree diversity, whereas remains connected other populations. Using long‐term capture–recapture data, we analyzed effects density‐dependence seed availability on growth, survival, recruitment dormice. Results indicated that both experienced large fluctuations growth rate, slight mean decline. Survival fluctuated less was higher Montnegre, likely reflecting latter. We found negative relationship between size rate survival especially suggesting significant density‐dependent varied stochastic annual abundance. influenced pulsed acorn production Contrarily, high asynchrony beechnut abundance dampened dynamics availability. Our findings emphasize complex interplay ecological evolutionary mechanisms range, highlighting critical local resource shaping dynamics.
