The response of complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria to variable nitrogen (N) inputs and nitrification inhibitors (NIs) remains poorly understood. We conducted two experiments, in a soil where both clade A B comammox Nitrospira were present, identify the type (ammonium sulphate vs. urea) level N-fertilization (0–500 mg-N-kg‐1d.w. soil) that are conducive growth comammox, compared canonical microorganisms (AOM), subsequently assess their three commercial (DCD, nitrapyrin, DMPP) new potent (ethoxyquin) NI under these favourable N fertilization regimes. highest concentration ammonium stimulated AOM which showed dose-dependent increase by sources. DMPP primarily, DCD, imposed more persistent inhibition on than nitrapyrin ethoxyquin, result did not concur with persistence NIs (DMPP was least among NIs) but mostly driven selective inhibitory activity (AOB) prevailed studied soil. AOB DCD complemented proliferation archaea (AOA). induced significant changes communities. Comammox enriched depleted ethoxyquin. (i) releasing AOA from competition allows them proliferate efficiently, even high inorganic conditions; (ii) responsive input NIs.

Nitrification plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems and the biofilters used fish farms. Despite their importance, of canonical nitrifiers, comammox bacteria, archaea has not yet been sufficiently investigated. The aim this study was to characterize microbiome external canister biofilter freshwater aquarium, with particular focus on Nitrospira competition other nitrifiers. To achieve this, comprehensive approach combining metagenome sequencing co-occurrence network analysis interactions between microorganisms portable biofilter. were subjected changing feeding regime that affected ecological relationships abundance different microbial taxa. results showed presence two types nitrifiers biofilter: ammonia-oxidizing (AOA). Five genomes reconstructed, clade B being most abundant an average 7.8 ± 0.4%. In addition, families identified: Nitrosopumilaceae Nitrososphaeraceae, 4.3 Heterotrophs also bacterial community, particularly genera Actinomycetota, Planctomycetota, Pseudomonadota. Network indicated competitive heterotrophs, whereas no observed AOA. predominance Nitrospira, AOA over emphasizes better adaptation oligotrophic environments. This highlights importance within interaction networks, which can contribute optimization water purification systems RASs.
