Abstract Equine piroplasmosis is a worldwide tick-borne disease caused by the protozoan parasites Theileria equi and Babesia caballi , with significant economic sanitary consequences. It can also limit export of infected horses to piroplasmosis-free countries. These two are genetically variable, greater diversity observed in T. . This variability potentially impact diagnostic accuracy. Our study aimed evaluate frequency asymptomatic carriers these France describe circulating genotypes. We used species-specific nested PCR protocol targeting 18S small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene subsequent amplicon sequencing on blood samples collected from 566 across four National Veterinary Schools. The carrier varied considerably, ranging 18.7% around Paris (central-north) 56.1% Lyon (southeast), an overall prevalence 38.3%. were ten times more frequent (91.7%, 209/228 isolates) compared B. (8.8%, 19/228 isolates). Notably, was significantly lower northern region (Ile de France) southeastern regions. Interestingly, strong correlation between frequencies reported cases acute all geographic areas. Neither gender (female, gelding, or stallion) nor horse age showed effect carriers. In areas highest frequency, substantial proportion (22.2% 37.5%) carried before three, indicating high infection pressure. Genotyping 201 isolates revealed predominance genotype E (98%), only few belonging A (2%). detected originating Spain. All 19 belonged most common this species. discussion section explores link results, tick distribution abundance, detection febrile attributed piroplasmosis.
