Utilizing ecosystems' natural recovery potential is crucial for enhancing the scale and efficacy of restoration efforts. However, this currently underutilized in ecology, barriers to species recruitment remain poorly understood. In study, we develop an analytical framework that combines trait‐based dark diversity approaches evaluate understory plant community smelter‐impacted forests identify factors limiting absent species. A completeness index (CCI) was calculated 18 naturally recovering three reference Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The CCI used sites deviate most from their target communities compared traditionally indicators recovery. Community weighted means (CWM) traits observed were compared, principal components analysis relationships between missing among study sites. Species unable recover passively (i.e. with high probabilities) generally tall and/or large seeded. Understory structured along two functional gradients, economics size, which both coincided distance smelter. Dark trait analyses useful identifying and, therefore, providing guidance on targeted actions. We conclude by discussing limitations opportunities approach a context, highlighting importance carefully defining habitat‐specific pools critically assessing ecological significance probabilities.
