Abstract Background Respiratory dysfunction is an important contributor to morbidity and mortality in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), but it unclear what parameters are sensitive diagnose monitor respiratory across phases. Objectives We aimed characterize mild moderate PD. Methods In 20 individuals without cardiopulmonary comorbidity, pulmonary inspiratory muscle function testing were performed ON‐medication. Subsequently, the acute ventilatory response hypoxia (HVR) was assessed by gradually decreasing F I O 2 from 0.209 (room air) 0.127, which compared eight age‐ sex‐matched healthy controls under arterial blood gas monitoring. Lastly, on different days, same with PD underwent six blinded exposures 45‐min normobaric at FiO2 0.163 0.127 or placebo OFF‐medication assess breathing responses. Results At rest, greatest severity had a lower tidal volume (pairwise comparisons: 0.59 vs. 0.74, P = 0.038–0.050) tended have higher frequency (17.7 14.4, 0.076), despite normal function. A exposure induced significantly HVR (−0.0489 0.133 L.min/%, 0.0038). Acute reduced regardless of severity. Subacute milder be those more ( 0.079). Conclusions present PD, including relatively severity, characterized altered patterns as well HVR, testing.

Abstract The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in the coordination of several physiological functions including sleep/wake process. Significant changes ANS activity occur during wake-to-sleep transition maintaining adequate cardiorespiratory regulation and brain activity. Since sleep is a complex homeostatic function, partly regulated by ANS, it not surprising that disruption trigger and/or evidence symptoms impairment. Indeed, studies suggest bidirectional relationship between impaired function (i.e. enhanced sympathetic drive), emergence/development disorders. Furthermore, epidemiological described strong association sympathetic-mediated diseases development maintenance disorders resulting vicious cycle with adverse outcomes increased mortality risk. However, which how control circuitry becomes affected progression ANS-related remains poorly understood. Thus, understanding mechanisms underpinning sleep/wake-dependent modulation could provide insights into involving dysfunction. purpose this review to explore potential neural involved both onset/maintenance (Rett syndrome, congenital central hypoventilation obstructive apnoea, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart failure, hypertension, neurodegenerative diseases) their plausible contribution generation order may serve establish causal link heightened

This study investigated the effects of a non-contact boxing exercise program on maximum expiratory pressure and aerodynamic voice measurements. Eight adult males diagnosed with Parkinson's disease participated in study. Individuals twice-weekly classes lasting one hour across 12-months. Dependent variables were measured three baseline days then at six additional time points. A meter acquired pressure, pneumotachograph system transglottal airflow subglottal air pressure. Measures average significantly increased after 9- 12- months when compared to baseline. There was an increasing trend for these measures all participants, corresponding large effect size. did not change over course or 12-months, although their stability may indicate that influenced maintenance respiratory-phonatory coordination during voicing. had significant people disease. The aerobic nature challenges respiratory muscles potentially explain "ingredient" causing this effect. small sample size pilot necessitates future research incorporating larger more diverse participants.
