Abstract In recent decades, the commercial importance of cephalopods has increased considerably, being an important fishing resource around world. However, during preparation for commercialization those species, especially sold in markets, they suffer process known as “ calamari ” which includes removing and separating head, arm, skin or even having body structure cut into rings, ends up making it difficult often prevents identification can lead to replacements. this sense, present study aimed use large ribosomal region, rrnL (also 16S rDNA) genetically identify cephalopod species markets fairs Latin America. Whole processed samples were collected from supermarkets directly local fishers approximate collection location. Each generated sequence was submitted website Genbank molecular comparison included database subsequent genetic identification. Comparison sequences using Blastn revealed presence eight that are widely traded American region. Our results indicate labeling errors State Pará contained Dosidicus gigas (d’ Orbigny, 1823) found only Pacific Ocean generically labeled “National Lula”. No type substitution among at errors. Thus, our demonstrate effectiveness identifying evaluating

Abstract Brazil comprises one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots chondrichthyan fauna, currently with 12 orders, 44 families, 90 genera and over 200 species sharks, batoids, chimaeras. These inhabit marine, estuarine freshwater realms coastal oceanic zones from North equatorial central to South-western Atlantic Ocean. Reporting on occurrence in goes back pre-Linnaean Period. The golden era European Zoological studies put place knowledge local fauna many Brazilian endemic native being officially described. birth Ichthyology early 20th century, however, represents milestone for Chondrichthyan Systematics country when national scientists published first list species. This study provides an historical overview research through a literature review peer-reviewed publications shark taxonomy, phylogenetics morphology. Scientific trends 120-year period dedicated investigations are herein pointed out regarding scope subject area, methodology, target taxa, gender diversity. Research recommendations priorities further given assist researchers interested stakeholders future efforts science conservation country.

Abstract The apparent lack of physical barriers in the marine realm has created conception that many groups have a constant gene flow. However, changes ocean circulation patterns, glacial cycles, temperature, and salinity gradients are responsible for vicariant events fish species, including sharks. bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo , is an endangered small coastal shark species. Although considerable efforts recently been undertaken, little remains known about possible biogeographic scenario can explain its actual distribution within western Atlantic (WA). Here, we used 599 mitochondrial sequences to assess phylogeographic structure implement Bayesian phylogenetic analyses obtain divergence times reconstruct ancestral geographic range. This allowed us infer processes diversification S. into major divergent lineages. Our results indicated WA represents three independent lineages, with Brazilian samples differentiated distinct genetic cluster. posterior probability range analysis species likely originated northern region (Carolina Province southern Gulf Mexico), where it colonized southward through uplifting Central American Isthmus (CAI). Northern Caribbean clusters appear arisen from intensification Loop Current, which currently flows northward passing Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, east Florida. Following initial colonization, Northeastern Brazil group due sediment freshwater discharge Amazon‐Orinoco Plume. Thus, evolutionary history complex be explained by combination dispersal vicariance occurred over last ~5 million years (MY). We established confirmed population limits, demonstrating Plume constitutes significant barrier Finally, discuss some recommendations conservation shark.
