ABSTRACT The concept of cultural appropriation has drawn increasing attention from academic disciplines and nonacademic circles. Yet, there is no consensus on what constitutes nor whether it harmful. contested nature the suggests that important to understand how people respond such accusations. Indeed, understanding resist accusations (i.e., they account for their actions) can provide insights into defining its impact. Accordingly, we rely data an ethnography who attended peyote ceremonies (a sacred Native American practice) in a Southern U.S. state when are presented. Findings suggest participants delegitimized one two ways: saying does not exist (e.g., everyone) or exists but appropriators were respectful ceremonies). Regardless which approach used, drew broader narratives allowed them maintain positive identity while minimizing potential stigma being appropriators.
