We propose a novel approach to test the fundamental cause theory (FCT) by analyzing association between socioeconomic status (SES), as measured order titles “brothers” and “padres,” mortality in 2,421 German Catholic monks born 1840 1959. This quasi-experiment allows us study effect of SES on population with largely standardized living conditions. Mortality analyses based Kaplan-Meier product limit estimation show that there were no statistically significant survival differences high lower monks. holds for all birth cohorts, indicating monastic life offers health protection regardless disease patterns, causes death, or main risk factors given period. These findings support FCT: Whereas SES-related are widely confirmed finding general population, context conditions eliminates importance resources.
