Resilience Amidst Adversity: Experiences of Black Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract
Background
and
objectives
The
paucity
of
research
policy
on
the
impact
COVID-19
experiences
Black
older
adults
in
Canada
around
world
has
intensified
enduring
impacts
racism
their
health
well-being.
To
bridge
this
gap,
our
study
explored
mental
Montreal
during
early
period
pandemic.
Research
design
methods
Using
an
Afro-emancipatory
mixed-method
design,
we
collected
analyzed
data
from
three
sources:
a
survey,
focus
group
interview
with
service
providers
community
organizations,
individual
interviews
adults.
Results
Our
findings
reveal
that
struggled
challenges,
including
loss,
grief,
intergenerational
tensions,
encountered
systemic
barriers
accessing
services.
Despite
these
adversities,
participants
demonstrated
remarkable
resilience,
drawing
upon
faith
networks
for
support.
Discussion
implications
This
illuminates
complex
pandemic
underscores
imperative
addressing
barriers.
Understanding
ongoing
challenges
is
crucial
developing
targeted
interventions
policies
promote
long-term
resilience
equitable
healthcare
