Unpacking the Reasons for Dominance of South-South Migration DOI Open Access

In many parts of the developing world, South-South Migration (SSM) accounts for a larger proportion migrant population than South-North (SNM). Based on SSM from Ethiopia to Gulf countries and South Africa, this chapter presents five interactive reasons dominance SSM. First, historical interactions over relatively shorter distances create foundations more contemporary migration. Second, different socio-cultural processes help build capabilities enable individuals communities sustain migration southern destinations, relative northern destinations. Abstract This study investigates the role of intangible factors in migration decision‐making processes citizens from Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. While existing literature often highlights economic as primary drivers migration, this research explores how religious identity perception democracy freedoms—specifically, freedom expression electoral freedom—influence these decisions. Utilising data Arab Opinion Index 2012 to 2020, covers nine MENA countries considers variables, such gender, education level, household status, age, residential area, affiliation, views on social political freedoms. The findings suggest that factors, particularly perceived lack freedoms, significantly influence individuals' decisions, similar factors. Individuals who identify less religious, associate with a circle, perceive their freedoms are not protected more likely consider migrating. contributes deeper understanding dynamics region, providing policymakers crucial insights develop evidence‐based strategies addressing complex migration.
